Can you believe that a year has passed since the devastating earthquake in Haiti? How quickly time flies for those of us working comfortable jobs, living in comfortable homes with enough to eat each night to fill our bellies to a comfortable state. As you might imagine, things in Haiti are not quite so comfortable--in fact not comfortable at all--even though a year has passed. The economy is a mess and, since many raw materials were virtually wiped out by the quake, it has become impossible for many Haitians to make a living.
In response to the continuing devastation, the wonderful folks at Macy's have collaborated with Haitian artisans to create some truly beautiful pieces. The artisans receive 22 percent of the retail price for each item sold in the Macy's collection, which will allow them to support their families and build a better tomorrow in Haiti. Meet four of the Haitian artisans here!
Here are a few of my favorite items and their descriptions:
Have Heart Necklace, $10
Made of metal from recycled drums, this handcrafted pendant embodies the unparalleled creativity of Haiti's master artisans. Cool textured detail creates a look of rustic beauty. With faux suede cord.
Black and Blooms Colonial Tray, $35
Handmade and painted with vibrant acrylics, this large oval tray boasts sophisticated garden style courtesy of Haiti's master artisans.
Heart of Haiti Feast Tray, $40
Revel in the complex tones and textures of this rustic handmade tray. Crafted by expert Haitian artisans from the steel of recycled barrels, each one-of-a-kind piece is a beautiful centerpiece for the well-set table.
The selection is full of beautiful pieces that would make gorgeous gifts. Consider shopping for a better world this month when you need to select a birthday or anniversary gift (or maybe a gift for yourself!). This is such a simple way to make the lives of others a little more comfortable.
I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.
