this is, by far, the best explanation of Asian writing I have read to date. I've never tried to study Chinese, but I did visit Korea and put forth half-hearted attempts to learn the language.

I always wondered what told people the sounds. I've been playing with some of these characters for a while through Japanes, and the chinese readings (onyomi) which you use when you combine characters always threw me. Of course, there is an added level of abstraction there...


If only I had read this before I went to Hong Kong! I could heave tried to better understand what I was ordering! Great post. Thanks for sharing.
