The Best Gift I Ever Gave? Now that is a tricky question. I've given hundreds of gifts in my 30 years--some of them awesome, some of them tacky, some of them well-thought out, some of them perfect, some of them purchased at the last minute at a grocery store. I can't remember many of the things I've given--dozens of gift cards and random bottles of wine and sweaters I purchased at Macy's. I've wrapped some of the gifts in pretty paper with fancy gold ribbon; I've wrapped some of them in a brown paper bag.
But, by far, the best gift I ever gave was this: a holiday tree I crafted myself at age 3. I don't know quite how to describe this holiday tree except to say that is is a rather oddly shaped, six-inch tall chunk of plaster, intended to be Christmas tree-shaped. I suppose the pre-school teacher made the plaster tree. I glued on approximately 50 cotton balls (intended to be snow?) and a haphazard sprinkling of glue-covered red plastic beads (ornaments? or maybe lights?). The pre-school teacher signed my name on the bottom, along with my age.
My dad has faithfully taken the tree out every year since 1983 and, despite the fact that the cotton balls are becoming increasingly matted and covered in soot, he proudly displays the horrid thing on the mantel. I am pretty sure it is the most enduring gift I have ever given, and quite possibly the most loved.
