Pink is Three

Well, would y'all look at that. We've been together for three years here at Slice of Pink. Technically speaking, it's been three years and one day, but one day off is close enough considering that I completely missed our previous two blogiversarys. Hey! It could have been worse! I could have remembered the occasion but celebrated by buying you a toaster or a weed whacker.

But this year, I remembered(ish). So, what should we do to celebrate? We had best do something spectacular, something definitely involving champagne, because Lord knows when I'll remember it again.

Thanks for three years, y'all!

Luxe and Tux

When Anthony and Amanda got engaged, I pulled out a huge stack of bridal magazines that I still have, even after being married for nearly four years. Among the pages, I found dozens of old post-its and long lists of great websites and decorating notes jotted on napkins.

Apparently, before settling on daisies, lemons, and yellow gingham for our summer wedding, I had been planning a wedding on the beach, a pretty pink wedding, a destination wedding (France!), a Tiffany blue wedding, and a rustic wedding (Martha Stewart can make anything look good).

Will and I decided months ago that we were going to seriously get rid of a lot of useless junk and clutter when we moved and I knew that the stack of wedding books was probably top among the list of things that could go right into the trash. But, I couldn't do it. I couldn't get rid of them. So, instead of dramatically falling on the ground Eloise style to save the magazines, a tactic I reserve only for really important things like new dresses and more shoes, I put the magazines to use. I made a website and I am using the magazines and notes and lists as research.

I don't know about you, but I hate the same old wedding. The pillow mints wrapped in tulle. The white cake with the icing flowers and plastic pillars. The DJ who plays Hot in Here by Nelly. I mean, really. So, I started putting together a resource guide of good ideas. It was just for fun at first, something for Amanda, something to do as an unemployed summer housewife, but the list of ideas is still pages long and some nice readers have sent in more ideas for me to post, so I guess it might continue on for sometime (although I may have to pass it on to some other bored, wedding lovin' soul when I start law school, we'll see).

In the meantime, you can check out Luxe and Tux here.

None Taken

In the last four weeks, we have been to Los Angeles, San Diego, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Phoenix, and, finally, Atlanta. Atlanta was a nice grand finale of trips for the month--pulled pork, chicken and waffles, sweet tea, and Coca-Cola. In the South, you never have to worry about somebody slipping you a Pepsi and trying to pass it off as The Real Thing. Which it ain't.

I also met with two of my favorite blogging friends, Rachael and Katey. Rachael introduced me to the cutest-ever J-Lo and Katey took me to a knitting shop where I got some yarn and some stick thingys. I am going to knit a set of coasters. The intention was to make the coasters on the plane, but I was so afraid that TSA would take away my brand new sticks that I packed them into my suitcase at the last minute. I start coasters tomorrow. (For you knitters out there, I got the idea to make coasters when I noticed them all over the knitting store. It seemed coasters were very in vogue. Until I found out they were swatches. Swatches that look suspiciously like coasters.)

My co-advisor, who we will call Kevin, was pretty amazed at all this blog business. He couldn't grasp the concept of how and why I was meeting up with someone I met on the Internet. Kevin is one of my favorite people and so I tried to patiently explain the concept of a blog. I explained that there were political blogs, recipe blogs, sports blogs, celebrity blogs, food blogs, mommy blogs, blogs for everyone, really. Will and Rene tried to help.

What kind of blog, he wanted to know, was my blog, and why would people come and read it and then actually buy me gifts having never met me? No offense, he added.

And I couldn't really answer that. I don't know why y'all come round these parts. I visit certain blogs because they are smart or funny or inspiring or ridiculous or because I relate to them or because I can't wait to hear the next chapter in a story. Sometimes I visit a blog just because it is pretty. And, the truth is, I feel like I know y'all. Like we could meet up in a coffee shop and talk and laugh for hours. Which we have.

So, let's tell Kevin. Why do we do what we do and read what we read? And why So Pink, considering that nothing of real substance actually exists here? I'm gonna print out the comments for Kevin. Since he doesn't know much about the Internet, I'm sure he still prefers his memos in paper form.

So Yellow

Banana_2Yesterday I noticed that the Slice of Pink homepage was gone and had been replaced by some site selling tickets to see Eric Clapton and Mariah Carey. Apparently, I forgot to renew my site. It would have been awesome if they had sent me an email letting me know that I was about to get the boot. Instead, it was all pink one day and Mariah Carey the next. Please know, dear readers, that I would never, never, try to get you to purchase a ticket to Eric Clapton or Mariah Carey. I am not, however, against trying to get you to purchase a Banana Slicer. Because how cool is that! And useful! And fun! Don't y'all want one? I totally do.

When I saw that Pink was no longer pink, I immediately freaked out. As far as I could tell, it had been purchased by a company and I was not sure how much it would cost to get back. How much would I be willing to pay? $100? $500? $1000? Would I need to take up a collection? Would I have to become Slice of Yellow? Or Slice of Purple?

Luckily, the drama was short lived and two phone calls later I was again the owner of Slice of Pink for the bargain price of $36. I'm not sure how to get the actual stuff back on there, but at least it is possible and not lost to a website pirate or another lovah of the pink. Let's all breathe a sigh of relief. We don't have to go yellow.

Just Peachy

Hooteannie

Yesterday a box arrived in the mail from The Farmhouse. Rachael always sends such fabulous gifts and this time was no different. I received an assortment of fun notecards, some of which were from an adorable company called Hoote + Annie. The timing on the package was perfect because I had actually just been thinking about my friends in Atlanta.

This past week--the week in which I did not post a single blog because it had come down to a nightly critical choice between three good hours of sleep or a post for y'all--we spent nearly every night in a hotel. Early in the week, we took a 36 hour trip to our state capitol in Sacramento, spending 14 hours of that time in a school van with our robotics team. We had a day to repack and spent the rest of the week at the Los Angeles Regional FIRST Robotics Competition where our robotics team won the most prestigious award given to a team at a regional event, The Chairman's Award.

Other than a big blue banner, two giant trophies, and medals for the whole team, the award granted our team a place at the Championship event in Atlanta, Georgia this April. I'm feeling a craving for some chicken and waffles, some grits, and some sweet tea.

Locked and Loaded

"Hey Will, Tim thinks it's crazy that I give people from the internet my address and meet up with them for lunch and stuff."

"Why don't you post about my new gun?"

"What new gun?"

I stare at Will with a blank look and then it hits me....

"Ohhhh. See, the problem is, now I want to post that you want me to post about your fake gun."

"Good, you should. I like being on your blog because I say some funny shit."

Oh. Okay.

Celebrate!

A proper pink celebration must consist of these elements:

Cupcakes (preferably chocolate), champagne, Elton John love songs, cotton candy lollipops, a vase of pink peonies, presents with fat pink bows, high heeled shoes, and strings of pearls.

If we haven't already had the pleasure of meeting, you can read all about me here. I previously blogged here and I still blog my life as a substitute teacher here.

So, bonjour and welcome to Slice of Pink. I've gone fancy! Please come again soon. You're always invited.
