Her Majesty

Thequeen

Queen Elizabeth turns 82 today. This is not really relevant to anything on Slice of Pink, but I am digging the slideshow at Time which has some great photographs of her highness.

Also, this is certainly an excuse to have a big chunk of cake for dessert tonight. No need to feel guilty, you're celebrating the Queen's birthday.

Grown-Up Grilled Cheese Party

April is Grilled Cheese month. I know this because my trusty sources, Hi Monkey! and LAist, told me. If you live in the Los Angeles area you can participate in Melt the Vote at Clementine, otherwise you should definitely host your own grilled cheese party.

CheesepartyIf you want to get real fancy, send out invites like these from Real Simple, editing to note that it's a grown-up grilled cheese party. Or just call your friends up and tell them to come on over.

Choose four or five recipes and create a ballot for voting.

Add some gourmet potato chips and some good beer.

Voila! Grilled cheese party!

The Recipes:

+ The classic grilled cheese.

+ The classic grilled cheese made with an iron, by Hi Monkey!

+ A fancy grilled cheese sandwich with fig jam, basil, and goat cheese at Family Style Food.

+ Martha's favorite grilled cheese sandwich which is packed with chorizo, roasted red peppers, and saffron.

+ Simply Recipes has a grilled cheese with bacon and pear.

+ A sautéed jalapeño and aged jack grilled cheese at Chow.

+ This recipe at Food & Wine combines three of the world’s most popular sandwiches—bacon, lettuce and tomato; fried egg; and grilled cheese.

+ Mario Batali's grilled mozzarella sandwich calls for fresh thyme and nutmeg.

+ Whole Foods Market claims the ultimate grilled cheese.

+ The "Gossip Girl" $50 grilled cheese sandwich recipe.

+ A white cheddar and roasted pepper grilled cheese can be found at The Food Channel.

+ Honey-Basil Grilled Cheese from YumSugar.

There are plenty more fancy grilled cheese recipes available with a simple Google search and you can certainly make your own creations--or allow your guests to make their own fancy grilled cheese sandwiches by offering a variety of breads, cheeses, and fillings. I think Hi Monkey would approve.

Happy Grilled Cheese Month!

Hockneyizing

Hockney

Back in the day, when I taught photography, I used to make my students complete a project based on Hockney's photographic collages. They would have to go out, take a bunch of photos, develop the shots, arrange the pictures, and then glue them onto a poster board. I would never, never have allowed them to use the Hockneyizer. It is way too much fun and, in case you were wondering, my goal as a teacher was to make anything fun into a whole week's worth of work.

March Love

Maybe it was Spring Break or the warmer weather, but March really flew by. Here are a few of my favorite things this month:

Longer days, cheap spring dresses, having house guests, Unruly Things, Peeps, hotels that give free coffee and cookies in the afternoon, San Luis Obispo, watching old episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, these cute bento lunch boxes, watching a A Year with Frog and Toad at the community college theater, warmer days for bike riding, drinking a pitcher of pear cider with my best friend forever.

Pink Goes {Green}

Have you heard? St. Patrick's Day is rescheduled this year.

The Pope says we need to celebrate on the 14th. Or maybe the 15th. Others say that Saint Patrick's Day will be on the 17th, as usual.

Some are going to resolve the dilemma by just starting the celebration today and partying through the 17th.

In other words, you are gonna need to be wearin' the green for the next few days. Thanks to Paper Pony, I have discovered Polyvore and have spent my entire lunch break building St. Patty outfits for you.

Like, for instance, this lovely outfit which includes a $12 green apple ring.

Green1

So, the jeans in this outfit are $200, but the shoes and the bangle are from Old Navy. Evens things out.

Green2

How about a little Lilly Pulitzer pink and green? Perfect for resort life, summer in the Hamptons, or St. Patrick's Day!

Green3

And, finally, this outfit, which I put together for you to wear out to a pub. Doesn't beer make such a good accessory?

Green4

Happy wearing o' the green. For the next four days.

No Animals Were Harmed in the Posting of this Blog

It's not that I haven't been updating since I started law school this week; it's just that I've been doing it elsewhere.

+ I was interviewed by the lovely and gorgeous Nicole at Tickled Pink.

+ My fridge was featured on Fridgewatcher. We even had vegetables--Brussel sprouts no less--in the crisper. Crazier still, we ate them. And they were good.

+ Our cat, Millie, was featured on Stuff on My Cat covered in a bunch of tinsel. According to the many people freaking out in the comments, tinsel is a major no-no around cats. In fact, Minky's Mom (this alone explains so very, very much) says it this way: "No tinsel near kitties!! Aaaaak!" Maryann (owner of nine cats) warns, "Oh my, that tinsel is dangerous to kitties." Lucky for us, Millie did not eat any of that tinsel, which was out of the package for about 14 minutes three years ago, and she continues to happily claw the furniture.

So, just wondering, should I take the knives and vodka away from her, too? Kitty parenting is so much harder than I expected.

Cardstock Gone Wild

Paperart

Amazing things done with a big stack of construction paper. It's what we could have done if we were not allocated single sheets of cheap paper and lame safety scissors in grade school.

November Love

Things I am currently loving: cranberry sauce, visiting with family and friends, gramma's stuffing, two Thanksgiving dinners, putting on warm clothes straight out of the dryer, Amy Winehouse (thanks, Kathryn), the big pile of firewood my dad sent home with us, using my sister's five bazillion hair products when we are visiting (I don't even pack my own), Moselland Ars Vitis Riesling (recommended by Michelle), Kaas Glassworks.

Irreverence

My little sister, April, started a blog today. After she made an account and chose a template, she called me asking what she should write for her first post. Writer's block already?

I suggested that she try a love & hate post à la Love is Blonde. While I perused the wine aisle, she listed her loves and hates to me over the phone. I agreed that it sounded like a great post.

When I got home, I checked out her blog and found this among the list:

LOVE: Sliceofpink.com.
HATE: The color pink.

Blasphemy!

Go check out Piece of Ape. High schoolers are all about the popularity, so leave a comment saying hello!

Thousand Dollar Dress

Dress2

Like many married gals, Sonya Naumann had a once-worn sparkling white wedding dress hanging in her closet. She decided to do something with it:

Recently it occurred to me that the thousand dollar dress was merely going to hang in an expensive bag for the rest of its life. This seemed ludicrous and ineffectually temporal. Amidst my ongoing curiosity about the very nature of marriage, the business, the presence of the politics surrounding it, and my own connection to it, I knew I had to do something with that dress. Thus, the project, Thousand Dollar Dress. It is my goal to photograph 1,000 individuals wearing my $1,000 wedding dress within the context of their own or chosen environment.

Dress1

I signed up to be a $1000 dress model. If Sonya ever comes my way, I'm gonna put on that sparkling white dress and take a ride on my pink beach cruiser.

Cool Running

During the summer I read Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All Night Runner by Dean Karnazes.

Dean just completed 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days in each of the 50 states and he blogged about it here. It almost makes me want to go run a mile or something. Almost.
