I was browsing Anthropologie's site, coveting all the new fall dresses, when I came across this photo:
Cute, right?
But then a commenter on the page got my feathers ruffled when she wrote:
Walking next to bicycle does not make an outfit appropriate for a bike ride. I'm confused about the models in these photos.Pardon me?
Number 15 on the list of Ways to Know You Have Bicycle Culture: Your entire wardrobe can be classified as "cycle wear." Especially those stilettos from Christian Louboutin or your new double-breasted trenchcoast from Tiger of Sweden.
Y'all I bike in 99 percent of my wardrobe and the ONLY reason I haven't biked in my Jessica McClintock formal or Oleg Cassani full length skirt is that I haven't been presented with the opportunity.

Loving this N.Y. Times article on Bicycle Fashion, and especially these quotes about New Yorkers who ride:
Ms. Page-Green, who runs a nonprofit group that provides meals to needy children, likes to charge around town on her bike. Sometimes she’s done up in sparkly necklaces and towering heels; other times she coasts to appointments, sans helmet, in a blazer and fresh-pressed jeans. “I get sweaty a little, but it doesn’t bother me,” she said. Her bike, after all, is a stylish appendage, “a kind of rustic enhancement,” she said.A desire to look workday glamorous impelled Michelle Tillou, an art dealer, to ride to her gallery on Beekman Place the other day wearing a blazer, elasticized trousers and patent-leather wedge-heel shoes. More often she slips on kitten heels. “The better to hook onto the pedals,” she said.

As the U-Haul filled up yesterday, it became increasingly clear that all of our belongings were not going to fit. It finally came down to a choice between our couch or our bicycles. Will and I quickly agreed that the bikes would make the trip from Davis to San Luis Obispo and the couch would be relegated to the curb. Who needs a place to sit anyway?

Last night, I picked up a bottle of Red Bicyclette Pinot Noir for a friend's birthday. It's not an expensive bottle of wine, but the label is beyond fabulous and, as you might recall, I buy my wines based on the fabulousness of their labels.
I stood on the wine aisle with Michelle for far too long, debating the Red Bicyclette. Did she think the label was fantastic? Did she think I was imposing my love for all bicycle things on other people who may not love bicycle things the way I do? Should I buy a more pricey but less cute bottle? After much more debate than reasonably necessary, I bought the bottle.
And then I got home and saw this headline:
Fake Red Bicyclette Pinot Noir: French Swindlers Found Guilty
And then this one:
Pinot Evil: French Court Finds 12 Guilty in Gallo Faux Pinot
Oh dang! The Red Bicyclette Pinot Noir is an impostor! Even though not one American consumer complained or likely even knew the difference, I obviously can't give an impostor wine--a plain ol' non-fancy French table wine--to a friend for her birthday.
Shame, I guess I'll just have to drink the bottle myself.

I received two pairs of glittens for Christmas--a thick, cozy pair from my sister and a thin, dressier pair from Will.
I know most of you don't have the same sorts of problems that I do, but in case you are looking to keep your hands warm while simultaneously applying mascara and eating a English muffin on your bicycle, these fingerless glove-mitten hybrids are so the way to go.
April and Will both gave me a cream-colored pair but, for variety, I decided to return one of the cream pairs for a black pair. My local J. Crew didn't have a black pair in stock, and they were sold out online, so the lovely folks at J. Crew went on a company-wide search to find the last unsold pair of black glittens in the United States. They pulled it off (I am so impressed!) and today I received my new pair in the mail, along with four pennies (change? a difference in the sales tax?).

One of the brakes on my bike went out a few weeks ago. The local bike shop is fixing it but, since it is the beginning of the school year in this bicycling town, they have a long queue of bicycles to fix and I can expect my bike back sometime in October. In the meantime, I was given a loaner, a neon green Boss cruiser.
Kinda like this:
Only more neon. Glow-in-the-dark lime green neon. And with BOSS imprinted all big on the side.
It's so not me, but they didn't have any pretty pink or sunny yellow or lovely lilac loaners and so I am spending a month riding around town on this neon green Boss.
Just after I left the shop on the loaner, a busboy standing on the sidewalk, smoking a cigarette, shouted "YOU HAVE NICE EYES!" as I rolled by. (He very well might have been drunk.) I kept on rolling, of course, but maybe I should rethink the Boss cruiser. The neon lime green, it brings out my eyes.

I'm a big fan of cyclist Christian Vande Velde mostly by chance.
I'll admit that I originally stood two hours in the rain last February to see Lance Armstrong. But Lance was all busy, you know, being Lance, while Vande Velde was totally chillin' next to me in his too-cute blue and orange argyle gear.
It was then I decided that it's cool to be a Lance fan in the way that it's cool to be a fan of the Yankees and golden retrievers and vacationing in Hawaii. Which is to say, for very good reason, nearly everyone is a fan.
And, when everyone is a Lance fan, it makes it more difficult to get Lance to come hang out with you. Like, I suspect I'll never go grab a beer with Lance. But there's at least some possibility, however remote, that I could meet up with Vande Velde for a Fat Tire or two at a pub downtown.
The point of all this, what I am really getting to here, is that our man Vande Velde came in 8th in the Tour de France and I figured that, as a true fan, I'd give a little shout out.
Superb job!
What do you say, VDV? Grab some beers?

I'm always down for a bar where you can buy a beer and a pickle.
On Friday night we rode our bikes out to Plainfield Station, a bar located on the edge of town. The place is surrounded by agriculture and is a good seven mile bike ride, each way. We actually rode out for a retirement luau, which was taking place in the park-like area behind the bar, but the night started to get chilly so I quickly set up camp at the bar inside.
Davis has a sort of reputation for being squeaky clean and well groomed, both of which this bar is not. Many of the luau-goers kept referring to it as a "biker bar," which, also, it clearly is not:
a.) The bartender is a pretty college graduate who, finally following her dreams, just completed cosmotology school.
b.) Oops, I Did It Again played on the jukebox.
c.) They serve vegetarian tacos.
d.) One of the televisions was showing an E! special on The White House.
Somehow, these facts don't really scream "biker bar" to me. Seems to me there should be more tattoos and less Britney Spears and maybe, I don't know, a motorcycle parked outside.
Several of us stayed for some pitchers of beer, long after the retirement luau had dismantled. Sometime after midnight, we all hopped on our bicycles and rode the seven miles home. So, maybe it is a "biker bar" after all. Even so, I wouldn't call it hardcore: one of the members of our biker gang has a hula hoop rack installed on his bicycle.

Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day here at the Capitol (which, interestingly, does not coincide with National Bike to Work Week, which was last week) and, for as much as I talk nineteen to the dozen about bicycling, I will not be riding my bike to work tomorrow. My office is 15 miles or so from my home, a distance that is certainly ride-able, but only if I don’t mind arriving a bit sweaty, which I do mind, actually, because I have a luncheon to attend. Plus, then I would have to ride back and, seriously, I have a 30 page paper due in two days and biking across the causeway does not exactly put words on a page, you know what I mean?
I was feeling kinda bad about my non-participation—a self-professed bicycle commuter not participating in the annual event—but I guess it’s not all bad since 10 months out of the year I do nearly all my commuting via bicycle and, even now, I use my bike on a daily basis for running errands and whatnot. (See how I rationalize?)
Anyway, I commute to the city by bus, so I’m being environmentally friendly. Not to mention I smell a whole lot fresher.

I was so busy blah-blah-blahing about Lance Armstrong that I neglected to point out that at the AMGEN event I was standing right next to Christian Vande Velde.
Who?
Um, only the RIDER TO FEAR IN '09.
And so cute in argyle!
February 17, 2009 in I Like to Bike | Permalink | Comments (2)
I am suddenly obsessed with Lance Armstrong.
Lance was in Davis yesterday, kicking off the AMGEN Tour of California, a 750 mile nine-day ride through the state. It was cold, wet, and windy--a terrible day for a bike ride (trust me, I biked in it)--but Lance just cycled by, all unruffled and confident, ready for 120 miles.
We might have made eye contact.
(Or, Will might have said, "there's Lance!" And then I quickly turned, just in time to see Lance breeze by on his way to check in. Somethinglikethat.)
I failed to get a photo of Lance due to all the gawking. I did take a few other photos here.
Lance is somewhere in this mess:
I am even following Lance on Twitter now, so I knew that yesterday's race was "one of the toughest" he's had on a bike, even before every news station reported it. Also, he crashed today and got a massage.
We're practically friends.

{Number 15 on the list of Ways to Know You Have Bicycle Culture: Your entire wardrobe can be classified as ”cycle wear”. Especially those stilettos from Christian Louboutin or your new double-breasted trenchcoast from Tiger of Sweden.}
Today I biked in Bitten jeans, an Old Navy coat, Banana Republic sweater, and Poof! ruffled tank top.
Shannon asked what kind of bike I ride, imagining a really cute cruiser. I do have a cute pink cruiser, which I adore. My cousin, Katie, got it for me and I brought it to Davis all the way from sunny San Diego. It is fabulous for lovely weekend rides.
On a daily basis, however, I use a Jamis commuter bike, which has gears and definitely gets me around quicker.
One bike for style, one for swiftness.

I am currently prohibited from purchasing prints. Will says that I have too many unframed items lying around and until I get those items up on the walls (including a largeish Obama piece by Jonathan Hoefler), I can't continue to purchase more.

In the recent comment section of this post, Good Girl Gone Blog asked:
How does one ride a bike in a dress?
Shannon added:
I've wondered that myself. You've mentioned the whole dress wearing while biking thing before and I've wondered about gusts of wind and exposed undercarriages. Do you carry modesty clips so your dress won't fly up? Or do you wear shorts underneath? Or do you just throw caution to the wind and give your town a show? Fill us in!
Number 15 on the list of Ways to Know You Have Bicycle Culture: Your entire wardrobe can be classified as ”cycle wear”. Especially those stilettos from Christian Louboutin or your new double-breasted trenchcoast from Tiger of Sweden.
I ride my bike in dresses. I ride my bike for a night out on the town. I've even ridden my bicycle to job interviews, wearing a full suit, nylons, and a pair of heels.
It's not quite as impressive as it sounds. Once you decide to do it, everything just sort of falls into place.
Most of the time the dresses I wear are knee length, which makes biking in them rather simple; any shorter and passersby might get a peek of my panties, any longer and the skirt has a tendency to get tangled in the spokes. I resolve these two issues by wearing leggings under shorter dresses and by holding the hem of longer dresses in my non-steering hand or by strategically folding and tucking just right. I'd recommend starting with knee-length, a-line types and graduating into fitted pencil skirts after some practice.
The hardest part of biking in a dress is actually getting on to the bicycle. The best way to do this, particularly if the dress is more form-fitting than flowing, is to put the bike in the street and stand on the curb. Just a few inches can make a huge difference. Then hop on and start pedaling.
And, you know, pretty panties are always the way to go, but on days that you are bicycling in a dress, a conservative boyshort is probably your best bet.
If you are serious about riding in a dress, Keeping it Awkward has some practical advice including the angle at which your knees should be. There's also a Diva's Guide to Biking. This is some serious business.
I swear, if I had been so in love with bicycling on the day I got married, I would have pedaled in my wedding dress, like these lovelies:
{The couples are: Rebecca & Jeremy, Jennifer & Kevin, and Chap & Maura, who I do not know, but absolutely adore.}

I have a long, cold bike ride ahead of me this evening.
Sure, I ride my bike on a daily basis--to school, to the grocery store, to the coffee shop--so I'm not really complaining. Even when it is cold, drizzling, or thick with fog outside, bicycling is my main mode of transportation. The reasons are fourfold: I hate to drive, biking is my main form of exercise, it costs a boatload of money to park on campus, and I like it.
But sometimes, I prefer to drive. If I am going someplace more than, say, five miles away or if it is pouring rain, the car is definitely the way to go. Tonight would be the perfect night to drive: Will and I are going to a little art auction on the other side of town. It's dark, cold, and I'm wearing a dress.
But, alas, our car is the shop after we (read: Will) wrecked it on the freeway. I'll tell you all about that fun tomorrow. For tonight, I'm checking in to complain (just a little bit) about riding all the way across town, in a dress, in the cold, on my bicycle.
I'm totally sucking it up, but there better be wine at the end of this bicycle ride, is all I'm saying

Okay, bosses. I'm checking in hourly with my updates.
9 AM
The morning has been super-productive! I completed two tasks: putting away my suitcase from the trip and sending off two interview thank you notes. Plus I got ready already. Here's the proof:
Ready to go. All that work before 9 AM is exhausting. Is it too early for a nap?
10 AM
Yo, yo. I'm reporting to you live from Copyright class. Last hour, I did my Copyright reading--the NFL got all pissy with some sports bars--and then I rode my bicycle to school. You'll be terribly excited to see how much reading I have to do today. Fascinating! Also, I bought a coffee.
11 AM
I'm now in Constitutional Law II, also known as the bane of my existence. My professor is talking a mile-a-minute about political process models, insular minorities, preemptory challenges, quasi-suspect classifications, and stigmatization. Wish you were here!
12 PM
Announcement: I finally had a chance to pee! Woot! I will now be attending a lunchtime discussion on Careers in In-House Counsel. I will attempt to multi-task by listening to the speakers, eating my free lunch, and also getting some tasks done. On deck: reading for my next class and responding to emails.
1 PM
Last class of the day, people, last class of the day. Then I'll really get down to business.
2PM
So, I've got this all screwed up because I've been telling you what I am going to do, rather than what I've actually done. This is not really a fantastic plan, because telling you what I am going to do does not really hold me accountable for actually then doing those things. For example, last hour I reported that I was going to class. Right after reporting to you that I was going to class I could have decided that, never mind, I was going to go get ice cream instead and you would never know. To iron out this wrinkle--to make your job easier--I'm going to stop reporting what I plan to do and start reporting what I actually have done. That said, I did go to class last hour and did not go get ice cream. So, I'm a stellar employee, in other words.
3PM
Last hour I went and negotiated with some contract people. I was all, yo, I understand that most people just sign contracts without reading the terms and whatnot, but I'm a baby lawyer and this indemnification clause? You're just gonna have to change that. I'm hardcore(ish). I rode my pink bike over to take care of that business so it took most of the hour, however, we are going to count that as TWO tasks completed because in my world riding a bike to run errands = working out!
4 PM
COULD THIS POST GET ANY MORE BORING? For all of you who thought my life was a drunken giraffe-petting magical adventure, boy, were you wrong. Worst of all, I can't even blame you for asking for these incredibly boring hour-by-hour updates on the life of a law student, because you didn't ask for them. I am forcing them upon you in what could be the worst-ever post in the history of SoPink. But, I'm all committed to the post now, so I'll report that last hour I attempted to figure out some website stuff. Also, I rode my bike home so I am now eating candy corn.
5 PM
I applied for a job.
6 PM
I went email crazy last hour! I email, email, emailed. Then I rode my bike to Starbucks, where I am now enjoying an oatmeal (Starbucks has oatmeal. What?) and a caffe latte with some friends.
7 PM
The getting things done went all to hell because Shannon did not bring any homework and we all got distracted by Pundit Kitchen and Fail Blog.
8 PM
Um. Yeah.
9:29 PM
Going to the bar.

Something tells me that I should not buy this fabulous bicycle basket. I'm thinking it would take, oh, SIXTEEN SECONDS for it to be stolen. And only that long because we live in a super-safe town. Anywhere else and it would be gone in four.
